Active duty and veterans played for free at the Copperas Cove municipal golf course, last Friday, 13 May, 2022. Breakfast and lunch were provided by Whataburger and The Reef Grill restaurants. Military Appreciation Day is held every year by the donations of sponsors and benefactors.
“This is a military-appreciation tournament paid for my sponsors so it’s completely free to the soldiers,” said Jeff Stoddard, Copperas Cove director of Parks and Recreation. Since the course is a municipal feature, Parks and Recreation oversee it. “They get breakfast, lunch, a round of golf, and have prizes available.”
Approximately 28 teams showed up, with about 108 golfers. This event is held annually, and this is the second iteration. The basic tournament fee is about $32, which includes the cart rental. Soldiers are only expected to bring their clubs.
Stoddard, a retired U.S. Army sergeant major, said “The Battle of the Battalions,” coming this September, pits a four-man team in one battalion against the other competing battalions. 3rd Cavalry Regiment took home 2021’s trophy.
