FORT HOOD (Now designated Fort Cavazos), Texas – Next week, from May 9 to 13, troopers, leaders, veterans and friends of the 3d Cavalry Regiment will gather to celebrate 177 years of service to the nation during Brave Rifles Week.
The Regiment of Mounted Riflemen was constituted on May 19, 1846. This year, the regiment celebrates 177 years of service reflecting and renewing many traditions during Brave Rifles Week. The week-long event will also celebrate 32 years since winning the Gulf War, 17 years Brave Rifles has partnered with Central Texas since moving from Fort Carson, Colorado, and 7 years since all positions in the Army have opened to women.
“Brave Rifles Week is a great way to introduce troopers to the regiment’s history that doesn’t entail a PowerPoint briefing,” said Capt. Daniel McBain, the 3d Cavalry Regiment historian. “It brings the history to life hearing first-hand accounts from veterans of the regiment and gives them tangible history to see and be proud to be part of.”
The week will kick off with a regimental run down Legends Avenue, followed by bracket-style sporting events including basketball, football, cornhole, EA sports, an art competition, family friendly events and much more.
Pfc. Alexander Wallace, a native of Morgan, Utah, and mortarman assigned to 1st Squadron shared his excitement for the week’s activities. “I’m happy to get the week to spend this time with my battle buddies and their families just having a good time,” he said.
Media representatives interested in covering events during the week should RSVP to the 3d Cavalry Regiment public affairs office at gabriela.s.thompson2.mil@army.mil no later than May 5 at 12 p.m. Escort details will be provided on an as-needed basis and only for media who RSVP.
